Mike Phelan says he is confident Hull will start converting their chances and start picking up wins

Hull manager Mike Phelan says he is assessing his options ahead of a crucial January transfer window for the club.

The Tigers sit 19th in the Premier League following a spell of just one league win in 11 games, and Phelan admits reinforcements are needed in the New Year.

"There have been lots of phone calls," said Phelan. "The phone bill is going through the roof. We're watching a lot of players."

Hull brought in Ryan Mason and Will Keane during the summer but their activity elsewhere in the transfer market was limited.

He added: "Everything boils down to 'do you want to spend or do you go into the loan market? We will have to look at our options."

Phelan's side make the trip to east London to face West Ham on Saturday, and the former Manchester United assistant is taking plenty of positives from his team's 3-0 defeat at Tottenham during the week.

"I thought we went about our business really well at Spurs. We had opportunities to score, but unfortunately we didn't take them," said Phelan.

"The positive is that we are creating chances. We now just need to start taking them.

"Our heads won't dip though. There's no point sulking about things that have happened. We look forward to the next game.

"We are showing positive signs. I want my team to express themselves and take the game to West Ham tomorrow."

However, Phelan is aware of the threat West Ham poses and wants to see his side boasts a more aggressive approach.

The Tigers are without a clean sheet since August and with Andy Carroll set to feature for the hosts, the manager knows they'll need to be alert.

"I want my team to express themselves and take the game to West Ham tomorrow," he said.

"We have to be on our guard. I've got enough quality in defenders to be able to stand up to that challenge."
