Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Ian Harte share their views on Leeds' current form and the team's chances of a return to the Premier League

Former Leeds players Ian Harte and Jimmy Hasselbaink are impressed by the job manager Garry Monk is doing at Elland Road.

Having been appointed in the summer, Monk only won one of his first six Championship matches.

But he has turned things around and, after beating Derby on Friday, they are third in the table, six points behind second-placed Brighton.

“I thought the performance against Derby in the first half was pretty special,” former Leeds defender Harte told Goals on Sunday. “They were in their face and controlled the game from start to finish.

“The manager was under pressure early on but he’s turned it around and they are playing really well. It will be difficult [to get into the top two places]…but if Leeds can keep the pressure on hopefully they can do it. It’s a massive club and great fanbase.”

Hasselbaink won the Premier League Golden Boot with Leeds after scoring 18 goals in the 1998/99 season.

And he said: "If you get that club going they are a force. It’s a Premier League club and hopefully they can do it.

“They are in the top six and if he can keep pushing the top two they might have a good chance.

“[Owner Massimo] Cellino doesn’t get a lot of praise but with Monk in there and him in the background, that has helped Monk big time...just being allowed to get on with the job.”
