Leeds manager vows to spend carefully in transfer market
Neil Warnock says he is realistic about what Leeds can afford and has so far seen eye-to-eye with chairman Ken Bates regarding the finances required to build a promotion-chasing squad.
Warnock completed his first signing 10 days ago with the capture of Portsmouth skipper Jason Pearce for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £500,000, while the former Sheffield United and QPR boss has been linked with a long list of other players.
But although he is keen to bring in reinforcements to help the club challenge for a place in the Premier League, Warnock says he will not go crazy in the transfer market.
When asked if he had been told by Bates not to go for any of his targets, Warnock replied: "No, not at all, because I'm realistic about what we can afford.
Hunger
"I know the players' wages that we're going to lose and what we can bring in. As long as I don't overspend that money I'm saving etc I don't see a problem.
"I'm not throwing money stupidly. I'm trying to get value for money and at the same time I'm trying to get the hunger and the drive and the sort of quality we need at Elland Road, which I think has been lacking."
Warnock has placed six players on the transfer list and told five others they would not be getting new contracts during the close season.
