Leeds United have signed striker Billy Sharp from Premier League club Southampton.

The 28-year-old joins United on a two-year deal having failed to secure a first-team spot at St Mary’s.

Sharp, who tweeted his ‘delight’ at the deal, moves back to the Championship where he spent most of last season on loan with Reading and Doncaster.

He joined Saints in January 2012 but last played for them in a competitive match in August of that year.

Sheffield-born Sharp has also played Scunthorpe, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest.

A happy Sharp told Sky Sports News: "For three or four years, they have been on the verge of signing me but it’s never really happened.

"But I heard in the summer they were interested and I’ve held out for it and I’m really delighted. I can’t wait to get going.
