Southend manager Phil Brown has been charged with misconduct during and after his side's 3-2 defeat at Bury on the final day of the Sky Bet League 1 season.

Brown was irate at a penalty being awarded to the Shakers in the final moments after Ryan Lowe's header struck Sam McQueen's arm, with the Bury striker converting the spot-kick to give his side victory.

The Football Association said on Twitter: "Southend United manager Phil Brown has been charged for misconduct in relation to the game against Bury on 8 May 2016.

"It is alleged that on five separate occasions from the 93rd minute through to 30mins after the game, his language and/or behaviour was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. He has until 6pm on 16 May 2016 to respond to the charge."

The former Hull and Preston boss was scathing in his criticism of the linesman who awarded the last-gasp penalty, with the result meaning Bury finished above Southend in mid-table, calling the decision "an absolute disgrace".

He added at his post-match press conference: "The referee wasn't going to give it but he went with the referee's assistant. It's the 93rd minute in the last game of the season and he makes a decision like that. I want answers. The referee's assistant needs to be struck off.
