Shrimpers' squad have not yet received January wages

Southend United have failed to pay their players' wages for January, Sky Sports News understands. With the club facing a winding-up order and strapped for cash, the players have reportedly felt the brunt of the club's financial problems. The Shrimpers owe approximately £200,000 to the Inland Revenue, something chairman Ron Martin disputes. The Essex club could face administration and a 10-point deduction should their financial health not improve. Southend slipped to 18th in the League One table following their 3-1 defeat to MK Dons at the weekend. They are currently just one point above the relegation zone and any points deduction could have a devastating impact on the club's future. The Shrimpers players are due to have their next month's wages paid on Friday.
