Southend defender Luke Prosser has been taken to hospital with a suspected spinal injury after he was stretchered off during his side’s match with Cambridge United.

The former Tottenham youth player was floored by a free-kick from Ryan Donaldon’s during the second half of the goalless draw and was carried from the Roots Hall field wearing a neck brace.

Shrimpers manager Phil Brown later admitted he feared Prosser may have sustained a serious injury during the incident.

“I'll have to visit Luke in hospital tonight,” Brown said on Southend’s Twitter feed.

“He has pins and needles in his arms and that's a sign of spinal problems.

"We'll deal with it over the next 24-48 hours and we'll have an update on Monday. Luke will get all the support he needs."
