Rovers were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Tom Anderson was sent off for a late tackle on Matt Bloomfield and it ultimately proved costly as Jacobson scored from the spot after Adebayo Akinfenwa was bundled over.

Second-placed Ipswich could not build on Gwion Edwards' eighth-minute opener as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Blackpool.

The Seasiders levelled through Joe Nuttall's close-range strike and went in front through Jay Spearing's penalty in the 53rd minute after Luke Chambers had fouled Sullay Kaikai.

But their joy was short-lived as Luke Garbutt converted a spot-kick awarded for handball five minutes later and that was how it stayed.

Peterborough moved up to third as Joe Ward's stunning 30-yard stoppage-time strike snatched a 1-0 win against Burton.

Rotherham are fourth after coming from two goals down to claim a 3-2 win at MK Dons. Alex Gilbey fired the home side in front in the fourth minute and Joe Mason doubled their advantage on the quarter hour with a thumping effort.

Dan Barlaser pulled one back for Rotherham in the 66th minute and they were level five minutes later through Freddie Ladapo's back-post finish. The Millers' stunning comeback was completed four minutes from time when Ladapo, who had missed a 72nd-minute spot-kick, bravely headed home, with Baily Cargill sent off deep into time added on.

Oxford moved into the play-off places with a 4-0 win at struggling Southend.

The U's made a blistering start, opening the scoring inside the first minute through Matt Taylor and James Henry made it two after 33 minutes with a 20-yard drive. Taylor added a third six minutes from time and Daniel Agyei wrapped up a routine win.

Josh Earl's first-half dismissal proved costly for Bolton as they were thumped 7-1 at Accrington. Daryl Murphy fired Wanderers into a fifth-minute lead from Thibaud Verlinden's cross but Accrington were back on level terms 10 minutes later.

Dion Charles was brought down in the box by Earl, who was sent off, and Colby Bishop scored from the spot. Bishop nodded in his second and Sean McConville scored his first goals of the season to make it 4-0.

It was five when Charles fired home and Offrande Zanzala added a late double. Benji Kimpioka's last-gasp strike snatched Sunderland a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Coventry, who had gone in front through Dominic Hyam's 26th-minute header.

Bristol Rovers needed a late Abu Ogogo strike to finally see off Shrewsbury in a seven-goal thriller. Tony Craig's bullet header put Rovers in front and Ollie Clarke extended their lead via a deflection.

Josh Laurent pulled one back for Shrewsbury before the break with a first-time shot, but Rovers restored their two-goal advantage at the start of the second half through Liam Sercombe's 25-yard shot.

Ollie Norburn made it 3-2 with a free-kick through a crowded penalty area and Laurent's second of the game hauled them level, only for Ogogo to snatch the points three minutes from time.

Ronan Curtis scored twice to help Portsmouth to a 3-0 win at Rochdale, with Ryan Williams wrapping up the points, while Scott Wagstaff scored the only goal of the game against his former club as AFC Wimbledon were 1-0 winners against Gillingham.

Goals from Josh Morris and Paddy Madden earned Fleetwood a 2-1 win against Tranmere.
