Seasiders land Australia international on one-year contract

Blackpool have completed the signing of Australia international David Carney from FC Twente. The versatile 26-year-old arrives at Bloomfield Road on a one-year deal with the option for a further year after the contract was approved by the Premier League. Carney, who joins Blackpool for an undisclosed fee, flew into the UK on Tuesday afternoon to complete a medical and paperwork as the Seasiders rushed the deal through on transfer deadline day. "We got the e-mails back from FC Twente just before six so it was a mad dash to get them printed off and faxed over to the FA and Premier League," club secretary Matt Williams told Blackpool's official website. "Fortunately the confirmation came through on Wednesday morning and I was delighted to tell the Gaffer (Ian Holloway) and Carns that the move had been given the green light." After putting pen to paper with the Tangerines on Tuesday, Carney flew straight out to Switzerland to link up with his national team ahead of Friday's friendly in St Gallen. Carney, who can play down either wing but predominantly features on the left, is looking forward to getting his first taste of Premier League action with Holloway's side.

Delighted

"It has been a busy 24 hours but I am delighted it is done now and I am looking forward to getting out there playing," said Carney. "The way Blackpool play suits me and I am looking forward to meeting the lads and getting started." Carney joined Dutch champions Twente last summer on a two-year deal after failing to make an impact in the Championship with Sheffield United. The Australian, who featured at the World Cup this summer, has won 28 caps for his country.
