Birmingham preparing bid for Swansea's Wayne Routledge

Birmingham City have approached Swansea with a view to launching a bid for midfielder Wayne Routledge, Sky sources understands.

The Championship club have also contacted Derby County about the availability of Johnny Russell as Gianfranco Zola continues the search for an experienced winger to bolster his squad.

Routledge, 32, is under contract at the Liberty Stadium until 2018, having spent the last five years in south Wales.

The former Aston Villa midfielder, who played for no less than eight clubs in the opening ten years of his career, has 20 appearances for the Welsh outfit so far this season, netting two goals.

Swansea are rooted to the foot of the Premier League table after their 4-0 thrashing at home to Arsenal, their 14th league defeat of the season.

Birmingham boss Zola is without Jacques Maghoma, who is on international duty with DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations and forward Greg Stewart, who is sidelined for two weeks with a knee injury - hence the urgency to add to his squad.
