Swansea boss Garry Monk ready for Sunderland backlash

Swansea manager Garry Monk is wary of a Sunderland backlash after the Black Cats' poor start to the campaign.

The Swans have made a solid start to their season, collecting four points from their two opening fixtures, including a battling point away to champions Chelsea. But Monk has warned that his side are up against a wounded animal on Saturday.

"The last two games are out there, everyone's seen them, but I think they'll be dangerous," Monk said.

"I've been in positions before when I've put in performances that have been criticised and your reaction as a person, as a player and a team is to bounce straight back, especially at home in front of your own fans. I'm sure that's what they're going to do".

"We're expecting a different Sunderland side to the one you've seen in the last two games."

Sunderland's first two games contrast vastly to Swansea's after they followed up their opening-day 4-2 defeat at Leicester with a 3-1 home loss to Alex Neil's Norwich City.

But Monk is sceptical of the view that Swansea are favourites at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

"There's probably a bit of a timing issue for us going up there," he said. "We expect them to be a lot more drilled, a lot more organised than they have been and a lot more determined.

"I think you'll see that in their game so we're expecting a different Sunderland side to the one you've seen in the last two games."

Bafetimbi Gomis has been in fine form this season and Monk says the striker has benefited from a pre-season trip to an Italian health resort previously used by Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.

"Bafe has come back fitter than he was this time last season," Monk said. "I said when I brought Bafe in that he would fit in and go forward with the squad and you can see it now.

"He picks things up very quickly and he is doing well. He is in a good moment - he has stepped up."
