Capital One Cup: Carlisle v Chesterfield preview

Winger Joe Thompson could make his Carlisle debut in the Capital One Cup first-round clash against Chesterfield.

Thompson missed out on the season-opening draw at Mansfield with a back spasm but manager Keith Curle does not expect that to be a major setback.

Curle cut Steven Rigg and Anthony Sweeney from his matchday squad after travelling to Mansfield but the pair will again be under consideration.

Striker Charlie Wyke is also on hand should either Derek Asamoah or Jabo Ibehre be handed a rest.

Chesterfield came through their opening League One fixture without any injury problems.

Boss Dean Saunders has hinted at changes to the team that started Saturday's 3-1 home win over Barnsley but the Welshman is not expected to tinker too much.

Ritchie Humphreys and Charlie Raglan are options in defence while Michael Onovwigun and Dion Donohue could come into Saunders' thinking for midfield places.
