Millwall have announced that chief executive officer Andy Ambler will leave the Sky Bet League One club to take up a role at the Football Association.
The former Fulham director will become head of professional game relations at the FA after more than nine years with the Lions.
Ambler departs the south Bermondsey club believing they have the potential to return to the Championship in the near future.
"Firstly, I would like to thank chairman John Berylson, the other directors and all the staff at Millwall for the help and support they have given me during the last decade," he told the club's website.
"I have enjoyed my time at Millwall immensely and wish everyone at the club and the fans every success going forward. Millwall is a fantastic football club and I have been very proud to have represented it during my time at The Den.
"Over the next few weeks I will be working tirelessly to ensure that the transition period leading to the arrival of my successor is a smooth one. The club is in a very healthy state with an excellent chairman who remains as dedicated and committed as ever.
"Under the management of Neil Harris this exciting young Millwall squad has the potential to return to the Championship in the foreseeable future and I will continue to follow the club's fortunes with great interest.
"In terms of my new position at the FA, it is one I am excited about and I look forward to a fresh challenge."
Chairman John Berylson said the club had a "first class" successor lined up to take over the role.
"Whilst it will naturally be a blow to lose Andy, it is no surprise that the FA has chosen him to take on this important new role," he said.
"He has been invaluable to me personally and to the board over these past 10 years, and under his guidance Millwall Football Club has enjoyed significant success both on and off the pitch.
"His will be some very big shoes to fill, but we already have a first class replacement lined up who I am confident will build on all the good work Andy has done.
"On behalf of everyone connected with Millwall I would like to thank Andy for his efforts and wish him all the very best for the future. I sincerely hope we see him back at The Den from time to time."
