Port Vale have appointed Neil Aspin as their new manager at Vale Park, with John Rudge also named director of football.

Former Vale defender Aspin, who was manager of Vanarama National League side Gateshead, returns to Vale Park 18 years after departing the club as a player back in 1999.

Aspin remains a fans' favourite at Vale Park, having been a linchpin of their team for more than a decade after arriving in 1989 from Leeds United.

Rudge managed Vale from 1983 to 1999, becoming the longest-serving manager in the club's history, helping to secure three promotions and the Football League Trophy during his time in charge at the club.

Aspin takes over from former Tottenham and Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown, who was sacked on September 16 with Vale bottom of Sky Bet League Two.

Port Vale agreed a compensation package for their new manager, with Gateshead chairman Richard Bennett saying: "Neil has left the club on very good terms.

"He's an ambitious person and we couldn't stand in his way of managing a Football League side where he is held in such high regard.
