Port Vale defender Adam Yates is back at home following reconstructive surgery on his face after a freak collision with his own goalkeeper.

The operation, which lasted three and a half hours, reconstructed his eye socket after it dropped five millimetres, reset a broken nose and realigned his upper jaw.

The 34-year-old also had his dislocated thumb and broken wrist reset, but he requires further surgery on his cheekbone and eyes in the New Year.

Yates is still suffering from double vision because his eyes are out of line, after smashing into 'keeper Sam Hornby in the reserve fixture against former club Morecambe on November 28.

Vale manager Neil Aspin, who called it the worst football injury he has ever seen, has promised that the club will stand by Yates until he has made a full recovery.

Yates signed for Vale on a free transfer from Morecambe in 2009 and has made more than 200 appearances for the League Two club.
