Huddersfield head coach Jan Siewert was not happy with his side's performance in their defeat to Newcastle, saying the 'least we could do is run'

Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert has criticised his players' effort levels and insisted they must "run like hell" if they are to have any chance of avoiding Premier League relegation.

A 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday condemned Siewert to a fourth consecutive loss since replacing David Wagner in January and left Huddersfield 14 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.

An early red card shown to Tommy Smith left Huddersfield facing an uphill task at St James' Park, but the German coach was left angered by his squad's timid response to the setback.

"I think the least everyone deserves in this club is that the players give 100 per cent effort and I wasn't pleased at our performance because we had a bad game. We have to run like hell," Siewert said.

"It was a tough moment after 20 minutes having one man less on the pitch, but we should have shown another face there.

"I said in the dressing room directly after the game, I met so many people here who gave everything for this club every day, so the least we can do is just run, as quick as possible, even if we have one man less."

Huddersfield have scored just one goal in Siewert's four games in charge, which leaves them with a league-worst record of 14 goals from 27 matches.

Siewert has so far opted not to start January signing Karlan Grant, with the 21-year-old having had to settle for two brief outings from the bench, before going unused at Newcastle.

Grant scored 14 goals in 28 League One appearances for Charlton in the first half of the season and Siewert said "it's definitely possible" that the striker could get his chance against Wolves on Tuesday evening.

Siewert says he may start Karlan Grant against Wolves on Tuesday

"But we have not just Karlan Grant in our squad, we have other players who are responsible," Siewert said.

"And I don't want to put the pressure so big on him because all the other players who have been here right from the beginning of the season have to know that they're responsible for everything.

"He shows me in training and because of the situation which happened in the game (at Newcastle) with our sending off I had not the possibility to substitute him. I don't have to explain anything to him, he's very clear and he knows what our long-term view is."
