Huddersfield's Alex Smithies is facing a fresh spell on the sidelines as he requires another knee operation.

Fresh injury woe for young Terriers keeper

Huddersfield Town keeper Alex Smithies is facing a fresh spell on the sidelines as he requires another knee operation. Smithies had hoped to feature in Saturday's season-opener against Bury, but veteran Ian Bennett was in goal for the 1-1 draw. The 21-year-old, who missed the final two months of last season, featured in three pre-season friendlies but now faces another spell out. Terriers manager Lee Clark is crossing his fingers over the severity of the injury, although nothing will be known until he undergoes an exploratory operation. "The surgeon who did the original operation will go in there and have a look to see what the problem is," Clark told the Examiner. "Hopefully it's simply a little bit of debris floating around, but it's no good trying to second-guess the situation. We'll leave it to the experts and he'll get the best treatment possible. "What's certain is that Alex needs to get it sorted once and for all, because so far he's tried surgery, a long rest and a couple of injections, but there's still an issue there."
