Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of goalkeeper Jason Steele from Sunderland.

The 27-year-old, who made 18 appearances for the relegated Black Cats last season, joins the Seagulls on a three-year deal until June 2021.

He will provide back-up to Albion No 1 Mat Ryan at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton has been looking at the club's goalkeeping options with Tim Krul likely to leave for regular first-team football, while Niki Maenpaa is heading for the exit after turning down a new contract.

Hughton told the club's website: "We're delighted to secure the services of Jason, a goalkeeper that brings a wealth of experience, having played almost 300 games at senior level."

Steele, who made 15 Championship appearances on Wearside, has also played for Middlesbrough, Northampton and Blackburn.

Hughton added: "Mat Ryan performed exceptionally well for us in the Premier League last season and Jason's arrival will, following Niki Maenpaa's departure, restore the options we have in this position.

"Jason will work with Ben Roberts (goalkeeping coach) and our other goalkeepers and I'm looking forward to welcoming him to the squad when we return for pre-season training."
