Summerfield strike shocks sorry Saints

Pre-season favourites Southampton suffered a shock 1-0 opening day defeat to relegated Plymouth in Saturday's early kick-off. After dominating for long spells, Saints went down to a close-range Luke Summerfield strike two minutes after half-time. Despite Southampton piling on the pressure in the second period, visiting boss Peter Reid enjoyed his first competitive win in charge of the Pilgrims, who dropped out of the npower Championship last season. Fellow Championship rejects Sheffield Wednesday also started life in League One with a win. Clinton Morrison scored on his competitive debut to help the Owls to a 2-0 win over League Two play-off winners Dagenham and Redbridge. A brace from Anthony Pilkington and a Jordan Rhodes strike sealed a 3-0 win for Huddersfield and gave newly-promoted Notts County a miserable start to life in League One.

Shock defeat

Last season's play-off finalists Swindon suffered a shock defeat to Brighton with Matthew Sparrow bagging a brace in a 2-1 win. Charlie Austin got the consolation for the home side. Goals from Gary Madine and veteran defender Ian Harte gave Carlisle an ideal start to the season with a 2-0 win over Brentford. Last season's play-off semi-finalists Charlton had Jose Semedo dismissed in the second period, but still held out to beat new boys Bournemouth 1-0 thanks to an early Akpo Sodje goal.
Late show
Two goals in as many first-half minutes from Anthony Wordsworth looked to have given Colchester victory, but a late goal from Richard Logan salvaged a point for Exeter. Goals from George Boyd, Aaron McLean and Grant McCann gave relegated Peterborough a 3-0 win against Bristol Rovers. New Oldham boss Paul Dickov led his side to a 2-1 win over North West rivals Tranmere with Dale Stephens scoring in each half. Sam Baldock and Danny Woodards were on target for as MK Dons edged Walsall 2-1. Luke Freeman's goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to seal a 2-1 win for Yeovil against Leyton Orient and newly-promoted Rochdale played out a goalless draw against Hartlepool.
