The new season kicks off on Saturday, and we begin our countdown with a club-by-club guide.

A club-by-club guide ahead of the new League One season

Doncaster Rovers, Coventry City and Portsmouth will drop down from the Championship and join League One this season. Rovers boss Dean Saunders will be hoping to put a nightmare start to his Keepmoat reign behind him and get the South Yorkshire club promoted at the first time of asking. Sky Blues boss Andy Thorn has recruited well with John Fleck, Kevin Kilbane and Adam Barton adding plenty of talent and experience to their midfield. Portsmouth on the other hand will begin the campaign 10 points adrift of the rest and a season-long struggle both on and off the pitch looks a certainty. Sheffield United are the favourites to win the league outright this season, not a surprise considering how close the Blades came last year. Only a penalty shoot-out stopped them from progressing last season and Danny Wilson will be hoping new signings Tony McMahon and Matt Hill will help them improve. MK Dons pulled off a coup when they managed to persuade ex-England international Alan Smith to sign for the club. The midfielder doesn't have the legs he used to but his experience and heart is hard to match. New signing Ryan Lowe will be looking to get himself on the score sheet from the off and help the Dons into the automatic places this time around. This season's surprise packages for League One could be Bournemouth, after manager Paul Groves dramatically improved the squad over the summer. Josh McQuoid and Lewis Grabban have been brought in to cause opposition defences havoc, while Eunan O'Kane and Richard Hughes will provide energy and experience to a midfield. The Cherries are good value to get promoted. Walsall will hope to avoid the drop for the third successive season after finishing 19th last term. Boss Dean Smith has had a busy summer with a big overhaul of his playing squad, and he will be hoping it pays off come next May. Swindon Town, Preston North End and Notts County all have good chances to achieve promotion should they hit the ground running. Swindon will be hoping for a successive promotion under the charismatic Paulo di Canio. Graham Westley and Keith Curle have both made big changes to their respective squads with the pair hoping they can make the play-offs at least unlike last year.

BOURNEMOUTH
