Cheltenham are unlikely to sign Steve Elliott after the defender joined the club for pre-season training.

Defender training with Robins but unlikely to sign

Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates admits he is unlikely to sign Steve Elliott after the defender joined the club for pre-season training. Elliott is currently without a club after being released by Bristol Rovers and has been offered a contract by Cheltenham. Yates has also allowed the 31-year-old to join the Robins for training, but concedes a deal is likely to be out of the club's reach. "There has been something on the table all summer for Steve and money-wise we haven't been there," Yates told the Gloucestershire Echo. "I am happy for him to come in and see what happens, but I am going elsewhere now." The Whaddon Road chief is aiming to bring in defensive reinforcements and has already lined up an alternative to Elliott. He added: "I am hoping to have something sorted in next couple of days. He is desperate to come here and I am convinced he is the right one for us. "He is young, strong, athletic, a decent footballer, good in the air and exactly what we want."
