Smith to talk with O'Connor

Walter Smith will speak with Garry O'Connor before deciding his international future.

Walter Smith has confirmed he will speak with Garry O'Connor before deciding whether the striker has an international future with Scotland.

O'Connor caused a ripple in the Scotland camp when failing to show for the trip to Ukraine on Wednesday.

He has since apologised for his actions, claiming he did not intend to divert attention away from Saturday's win over France, but it is not clear if he will ever feature again under Smith.

O'Connor's grandfather has muddied the waters slightly by suggesting his son had grown frustrated at travelling from club side Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia to sit on the bench.

"Garry's spending all this time travelling and what does he get for it? Ten minutes on the pitch," O'Connor's grandfather told the Scottish Sun.

"There aren't many players who would do the travelling for that.

"It's up to Garry to say why he didn't show up on Sunday - I don't know."

Smith is keeping his focus on Wednesday's clash with Ukraine and will likely speak with O'Connor once the dust has settled.

"Once we find out the reasons why then we will make the decision," Smith told Sky Sports News.

"But until we find out those reasons we can't really make a decision and I am happy to put it out of the mind for the moment and concentrate on the game."
