Chesterfield have been forced to make their director of football Chris Turner redundant because of continuing financial problems.
The 58-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday manager joined the Spireites as chief executive in 2011 before changing his role to director of football earlier this season.
The League One club, currently second-bottom of the division, have been struggling to meet their financial commitments and club secretary Ashley Carson says the decision to let Turner go was unavoidable.
"As part of necessary cost-cutting measures, I have carried out a full audit and it is with regret that the position of director of football is redundant," he said.
"Chris has vacated his post with immediate effect. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Chris for his hard work and dedication."
Turner said: "I am very disappointed to be leaving Chesterfield, but I can understand the situation and I leave on good terms."
Chesterfield have been struggling financially since owner Dave Allen resigned as chairman and director late last year and signalled his intent to discontinue his making up of the club's shortfall.
Allen, who is desperate to sell the club, fell out with a number of club directors who subsequently resigned themselves, but the owner has since agreed to keep the club running until it is sold.
