Paul Warne has been appointed permanent manager at Rotherham United on a one-year rolling contract.
Warne took over the Millers on a temporary basis when Kenny Jackett resigned in November but are rooted to the bottom of the Championship having lost their last nine games. Their relegation was confirmed on Saturday after losing to Fulham.
The club announced the news on their website, stating they had "agreed unanimously that the position be offered to Paul" and he would begin with immediate effect.
The statement read: "After what has been a very difficult season with injuries to key players, adding to what was an unsuccessful close season recruitment campaign, the board have been impressed with the way in which Paul and his staff have managed to get competitive performances in the most difficult of circumstances.
"The club are now stepping up preparations for League One, a process which is well under way in a number of key areas, including player recruitment and improvements to the club's training ground facilities.
"Paul is working closely with head of recruitment Jamie Johnson as we look ahead to next season, whilst he is also looking to appoint a new assistant manager to join the staff who will complement his own skills."
Chairman Tony Stewart added: "Paul has greatly impressed the board in a number of areas, in what has been a very difficult situation over the past few months.
"Paul knows the club inside out. Whilst he has held the title of fitness coach, he has always been much more than that under a succession of managers who have all tapped into his knowledge, motivational skills and coaching ability.
"He may be new to management, but all first time managers have to start somewhere. The Club has learned many lessons during the campaign but we are determined to ensure, under Paul Warne, that going forward we will play the type of football that brought us so much success in recent seasons.
"We are already excited about what we can achieve next season, and in future seasons, with Paul as our manager in a new and vastly improved structure."
