Plymouth recovered from a goal down to beat lowly Newport 2-1 and move three points clear at the top of the League Two table.
Scott Boden lobbed County ahead in the 24th minute before Jake Jervis headed Argyle level from close range early in the second half.
Oxford, who were Plymouth's closest rivals going into Monday's game, could only manage a 0-0 draw at Yeovil. Despite the draw, Yeovil are now bottom of the table.
United also slip one spot in the table courtesy of Marc Richards whose 63rd minute goal gave Northampton a slender 1-0 victory over Accrington.
However, Stanley's Sean McConville had come close to scoring inside 40 seconds when he struck the bar. The decisive moment came when Richards headed home a Ricky Holmes cross.
Dagenham and Redbridge moved off the bottom of the table with a 3-1 win at Stevenage.

Fraser Franks headed the hosts back into the game before Christian Doidge completed the scoring from close range with 37 minutes on the clock.
Notts County recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with visiting Morecambe.
And there were also drawn matches at Fratton Park and Field Mill. Portsmouth shared a goalless draw with Luton for whom keeper Mark Tyler made a string of good saves.
Mansfield and York finished 1-1 as Dave Winfield gave the visitors an early advantage only for Krystian Pearce to head the Stags level from Adam Chapman's cross in the 31st minute.
Promotion hopefuls Wycombe moved fifth in the table with a 2-0 triumph over Crawley.
Max Kretzschmar raced clear to open the scoring in the seventh minute before Sam Wood's close range header, from Garry Thompson's cross to the far post, sealed the points in second half injury time.
Rory Gaffney netted twice as Bristol Rovers beat Leyton Orient 2-1. His first was a superb individual effort while his 53rd minute winner was a clinical volley.
In between his brace Jay Simpson levelled matters for the visitors thanks to Blair Turgott's assist.
A brace of first-half goals earned Wimbledon a 2-0 victory at Exeter. Tom Elliott headed the first while Lyle Taylor added a second from outside the box.
In the day's only other game, Cambridge beat Barnet 2-1 with all three goals arriving during the final 30 minutes.
John Akinde fired Barnet ahead before United hit back with two goals in 90 seconds. Luke Berry headed the equaliser on 71, with Barry Corr's low shot securing the three points.
