Matthew Bates commits to Hartlepool

Defender Matthew Bates has signed a new deal at Hartlepool.
The former Middlesbrough centre-back, who joined Pools in the summer of 2014, impressed during the second half of the 2015-16 season.
The club had initially taken up an option on his contract at the end of the season, but manager Craig Hignett was keen to reward Bates for a string of fine performances as he helped Hartlepool climb the Sky Bet League Two table.
