Bristol Rovers have signed defender Peter Hartley from Plymouth on a free transfer.

Centre-half Hartley, 28, has signed for Rovers following the expiry of his contract at Plymouth.

"Bristol Rovers have (on Thursday) completed their first signing of the summer transfer window, with Plymouth Argyle centre-back Peter Hartley joining the club from July 1," Rovers confirmed on their official website.

Hartley progressed through Sunderland's academy but made only one first-team appearance before moving on to hometown club Hartlepool in 2009.

He made over 160 appearances for Pools, scoring 10 goals, and after a brief spell at Stevenage, who paid a five-figure sum for him in the summer of 2013, he joined Plymouth in June 2014.
