Former Silkmen 'keeper becomes a Saddler

Highly-rated goalkeeper Jonny Brain has signed a one-year deal with Walsall with the option of a second year, after rejecting Macclesfield Town's contract offer. The Silkmen were keen to keep Brain at Moss Rose but the 27-year-old has elected to seek pastures new in joining Walsall. With other suitors coming in at the last minute from League One and the Championship, Saddlers manager Chris Hutchings was eager to tie him down to a deal at the Banks's Stadium. Former Newcastle United apprentice Brain told skysports.com: "The offer from Macclesfield was a bit of an insult to be honest and I knew I could play at a higher level. "Also, I didn't always want to be trying to avoid relegation every season." Brain believes the switch to Walsall provides him with an ideal opportunity to prove himself at a higher level, while predicting bright things for his new paymasters next term. "Walsall is ideal for me, they have a nice set-up with the new training ground," he concluded. "The manager and coaching staff are very experienced and will develop me and it's a step up the league. "I will look forward to playing against the bigger sides like Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton and Charlton."
