Friendlies Round-Up

Both Arsenal and Man Utd kicked off their pre-seasons with convincing victories.

Arsenal and Manchester United both kicked off their pre-season campaigns with convincing victories.

The Gunners beat North London neighbours Barnet 4-1 at Underhill, while United strolled to a 5-1 success at Clyde.

Alexander Hleb (pictured) made his Arsenal bow and he marked it with a goal just two minutes in as he cut inside the box and fired home.

Thierry Henry - donning the armband following Patrick Vieira's departure - slotted home a penalty, before Dennis Bergkamp and Justin Hoyte fired home.

After the interval the only goal came from the home side as Dean Sinclair grabbed a consolation.

At The Broadwood Stadium, United took slightly longer to get into their stride and were just 1-0 up at the interval thanks to Kleberson.

Into the second period, Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy (penalty) scored, although Neil McGregor did grab one back for the home side.

United put an emphatic sheen on the score thanks to late strikes from van Nistelrooy and Liam Miller.

One negative point for United was the fact that Rio Ferdinand was booed throughout the game by Red Devils followers - seemingly reacting to his failure to pen a new contract.

A near full strength Everton side were held to a goalless draw by SPL outfit Motherwell.

James McFadden had hoped to impress on his return to Fir Park, but he failed to sparkle - with Leon Osman's first half effort, which struck the bar, the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.

Tottenham began their Peace Cup campaign in South Korea with a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors.

Marcelo Delgado fired the Argentinian club ahead just two minutes into the contest after he broke the offside trip.

Spurs soon found their feet and a brace of goals inside a four-minute spell had them in front. Firstly Jermain Defoe lashed home with Mido then slotting in to give Martin Jol's side the lead.

Tottenham introduced the likes of Wayne Routledge and Tom Huddlestone into the fray, but they were powerless to prevent Daniel Bilos equalising with 20 minutes remaining.

West Ham backed up their opening victory in Sweden over Falkenbergs with a 3-0 success against Trollhattans IF.

Goals from Carl Fletcher, Bobby Zamora and Teddy Sheringham gave The Hammers a comfortable win.

Maciej Zurawski missed a late penalty on his Celtic debut as Fulham held the Scottish giants 0-0 at Craven Cottage.

Mark Crossley had brought down Shaun Maloney, but the Welshman made amends as he dived low down to his right to save from the Pole.

Shaun-Wright Phillips's future again overshadowed a Man City pre-season clash.

This time the England winger missed the game against Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose through illness, although it later transpired that he had asked for permission to talk to Chelsea about a move.

On the pitch, City's form shows little sign of getting any better as they drew 1-1 with the League Two outfit.

Jon Parkin had given Town an early lead after just three minutes, but Qatari trialist Yasser Hussain pulled the scores level for Stuart Pearce's side.

Charlton defeated Bournemouth 5-2 at Dean Court, with new signings Darren Bent and Darren Ambrose both bagging debut goals.

Ambrose put The Addicks ahead, before James Hayter levelled. Francis Jeffers restored Charlton's lead before the break, but again The Cherries hit back - this time through Steve Foley.

In the second period and the League One side wilted and Charlton added another three through Jeffers, Bent and Matt Holland.

Portsmouth's good pre-season form continued as they beat Yeovil Town 4-2 at Huish Park.

Ivica Mornar opened the scoring early on and not long after Tresor Lomana Lua Lua doubled Pompey's advantage.

Paul Terry struck back for the home side, but Portsnouth restored their two-goal advantage just before the interval when Gary O'Neil pounced from close range.

Again Yeovil pulled one back, this time through Darren Way - but Portsmouth struck again as Svetoslav Todorov continued his comeback from injury with his second goal in two games.

Blackburn handed debuts to Craig Bellamy and Shefki Kuqi as they played out a 2-2 draw at non-league Morecambe.

Paul Dickov put Rovers ahead after Bellamy won a penalty, but just after the break Michael Twiss levelled for The Shrimps.

Rovers re-took the lead late in the second half and it was a wonderful solo strike from Kuqi, but that was not enough to give Mark Hughes's side the win as Jimmy Kelly levelled for Morecambe.
