Quakers explain Hodgson sacking

George Houghton has explained the goings on that led to David Hodgson's sacking.

Darlington chairman George Houghton has explained the goings on that led to manager David Hodgson's sacking on Wednesday.

Hodgson was dismissed following an internal inquiry after allegations that he had spoken with Bournemouth about their vacant manager's job.

Quakers chief Houghton has now confirmed they did receive an approach from Bournemouth for Hodgson, but the manager was already aware of a future meeting with The Cherries.

"It all started last Tuesday when I got a phone call from Bournemouth's chairman," Houghton told Sky Sports News.

"He asked a question - could I release David to go down and did I know anything about it that there's going to be an interview taking place.

"I told him I did not but he was free to do so.

"Then I got David on Friday and tried to explain the reasons.

"He denied it one way but he did know there was going to be an interview on Saturday morning and that's what started this off."

Houghton insists he did not make a final decision on Hodgson's future until Wednesday, but is glad to have put the saga to bed quickly.

"Only yesterday when I got the full report on the investigation," he confirmed.

"I didn't want to hang it on too long as it was important for the fans and the football club.

"I made a quick decision, a commercial decision, which was right."

Meanwhile, Boston United chairman Jim Rodwell has denied rumours suggesting Darlington have asked to speak with manager Steve Evans.

Evans has been constantly linked with taking over at the TFM Arena but Rodwell is adamant no contact has been made.

He said: "I can categorically say that Darlington have not contacted us about Steve Evans - but that's all I can say."
