Hibernian's oldest known supporter has died at the age of 106 - just months after seeing his favourites end their 114-year Scottish Cup hoodoo.

Belize-born Sam Martinez was a guest of the club as he watched Hibs' thrilling 3-2 victory over Rangers from Hampden's south stand last May.

Coincidentally, it was the gift of a free ticket that had cemented his love affair with the men in green and white in the first place.

Martinez first came to Scotland during the second world war, engaged in forestry work in the Highlands before later moving to Edinburgh.

One day he saw a crowd coming down the road in the Scottish capital. On being told there was a football match at Easter Road, he joined the throng and someone gave him a ticket; he became a fan from that day onward.

His eldest daughter Jackie told the Evening News: "He had a peaceful death. It was quick. He was surrounded by his family. He is going to leave a big hole in our lives."

A Hibs spokesman said: "Sam was a lovely person and touched us all with his character and commitment to the club.
