Injured Lithuanian star heads back to Gers for new campaign

Rangers have confirmed that Andrius Velicka will return to pre-season training with the club. The striker has spent nearly a year on the sidelines after sustaining a horrific knee injury while on loan at Championship side Bristol City. The Lithuanian front man suffered the setback just 11 minutes into his debut for the Robins after being sent south of the border by the Ibrox club. But with the injury clearing up, the 31-year-old looks set for a return to the SPL champions. Financial difficulties and the possible departure of star striker Kris Boyd could pave the way for an unlikely return to Walter Smith's first team plans. Velicka's career at Rangers looked to be over when he was farmed out after struggling to make an impact following a £1move move from Viking nearly two years ago. He did figure in the Gers' 2009 title triumph, netting four times in as many matches to help clinch a first SPL crown in four years. The former Hearts loanee returned to his homeland on holiday on Thursday morning having spent months working on his recovery.
