Former World Cup ref steps down after disciplinary hearing

Hugh Dallas has left his position as head of referee development at the Scottish Football Association. The former World Cup referee was the subject of an internal disciplinary hearing on Thursday evening. The disciplinary hearing revolves around reports that Dallas had forwarded an offensive e-mail about the Pope from his SFA account during the time the Pope visited Scotland in September. The scandal had led to calls from the Catholic Church for Dallas to resign from his post immediately. Dallas, who officiated at two World Cups, in 1998 and 2002, has been the SFA's head of referee development since June 2009. The news is the latest blow to hit Scottish football with a number of fixtures still in doubt this weekend due to the ongoing strike by referees.
