Scottish Premiership: Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev must wait for appeal verdict
Thursday 4 December 2014 22:09, UK
Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev may have to wait for another two weeks to learn whether or not his appeal against a seven-match ban has been successful.
The 24-year-old Bulgarian was handed the suspension by the Scottish Football Association after he was found guilty of using "offensive, insulting and abusive language of a racist nature" towards Aberdeen defender Shay Logan.
The incident occurred during Celtic’s home Scottish Premiership game against the Dons on September 13.
The on-loan Aston Villa man, who was making his debut for the Hoops in that game, has always maintained his innocence, but he has now been told his appeal may not be settled for another fortnight.
Tonev arrived at Hampden at 6pm on Thursday but was whisked away from the national stadium's underground tunnel three hours later after the SFA panel adjourned the meeting.
An SFA statement read: "An appellate tribunal convened tonight to consider an appeal in relation to the decision of the judicial panel disciplinary tribunal taken on Thursday, 30th October 2014, relative to Aleksandar Tonev (Celtic FC).
"The tribunal, having heard submissions, will adjourn for consideration before reaching their determination within the next two weeks."
Since lodging the appeal, Tonev has been free to play for Celtic pending the outcome of the hearing.
