Former Rangers and Scotland player Sammy Baird has died at the age of 79. Baird played for Clyde and Preston during the early part of his career before joining Rangers in the summer of 1955. He spent more than five years at Ibrox and was involved in their first match in European football, against Nice in the 1956-57 European Cup. Baird was also part of the team that reached the semi-final of the competition in 1960 before losing to Eintracht Frankfurt. An old left-half, he made 172 appearances for Rangers and scored 52 goals before leaving for Hibernian in October 1960. Baird later spent time with Third Lanark and Stirling Albion, while he earned seven Scotland caps and scored against France in the 1958 World Cup finals. He was said to have passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday morning. Rangers said in a statement: "Rangers' thoughts are with Sammy's family at this time."
