Ally McCoist insists Rangers have many more important games to play before turning their attentions to a Scottish League Cup last-four showdown against Celtic.

The Championship side were paired with the Premiership champions last Saturday, with Dundee United and Aberdeen drawn together in the other semi-final.

Ally McCoist feel’s promotion is more important than victory over rivals Celtic in the Scottish League Cup

Rangers currently trail leaders Hearts by seven points, albeit with a game in hand, and will take on Robbie Neilson's team home and away before the Hampden tie on January 31 or February 1.

During the run-up they also entertain third-placed Queen of the South and Kilmarnock (in the Scottish Cup) and travel to Edinburgh to take on a Hibernian side who won 3-1 at Ibrox just two weeks ago.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's trip to Cowdenbeath, McCoist said: "Listen, I understand probably better than anybody the excitement and the attention caused by the draw on Saturday.

"But we have arguably got far bigger games to play before then in our quest to get out of the division. I have always said that is the most important thing and that hasn't changed.

"I'm not daft enough not to think that the attention will greatly be on the Celtic game but it is vitally important we put that to one side and concentrate on some really important league games."
