Kilmarnock captain Craig Bryson admits his recent injury was a bitter blow for several reasons.
The midfielder was the subject of a failed bid from Hearts last summer and continued to attract interest heading into the January transfer window.
But an ankle injury scuppered any potential move as well as denying him any chance of a second Scotland cap against Northern Ireland.
The 24-year-old is now back in contention for Saturday's league game at Hibernian and is determined to get back to his best as soon as possible.
"I don't think the injury could have come at a worse time, to be honest," he said.
Interest
"I was playing well and getting interest. When I got the injury, the interest dropped a bit.
"I just want to get back to the way I was playing before the injury and wait until the end of the season and see what happens then."
Bryson made his international debut against the Faroe Islands in November but the injury ruled him out of the Carling Nations Cup game in midweek.
Wigan midfielder James McArthur was handed his second appearance and marked it with a fine goal as Craig Levein's men beat Northern Ireland 3-0 at Dublin's new Aviva Stadium.
"I saw that James McArthur came in and obviously did well and I think, if I didn't get my injury, I might have had a wee chance of getting called up and maybe another chance of playing," said Bryson.
Nightmare
"It was just a bit of a nightmare with the timing of the injury. But I think there might be another Scotland game in March and then at the end of the season.
"If I can get back fit and playing the way I was playing, hopefully I can be involved and back in the Scotland squad, as that was probably the biggest highlight of my career."
Killie are fourth heading into Saturday's game against Hibs while the hosts are third-bottom, but Bryson is confident they will turn things around.
"They have been struggling this season but I think they are in a false position as a club and with the players they have got," he said.
"I think they will come good and we know how hard this game is going to be."
