Former Scotland U21 international Chris Mitchell has died at the age of 27.

Former clubs Clyde, Queen of the South and Falkirk, with whom he was an academy graduate, have all paid tribute to the ex-midfielder, who also had a spell at Bradford City.

Falkirk are planning to hold a minute's silence in the 14th minute of the first leg of their Scottish Championship play-off semi-final against Hibernian on Tuesday.

Clyde will also observe a minute's silence in the League One play-off match against Queen's Park at Broadwood on the same night.

Falkirk, whom Mitchell joined in 2006, said in a statement: "It is with deep regret that Falkirk FC record the sad passing of academy graduate, Chris Mitchell.

"All at Falkirk FC would like to pass on our condolences to Chris' family and friends at this extremely sad time."

Clyde said: "Barry Ferguson, his staff and the players received the news when they were travelling back from Elgin as a group, and are today still coming to terms with the loss.

"The thoughts of everyone connected with Clyde FC are with Chris' family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

Queen of the South said: "Everyone at Queens is saddened to hear of the sudden death of Chris Mitchell, who was a double winner with us in 2013. Rest in peace Mitch."

The cause of death has not been disclosed.
