Former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid forward Florent Sinama Pongolle has agreed a six-month contract with Dundee United after a successful trial.

The deal with the 31-year-old is subject to international clearance which, if forthcoming, would allow him to make his debut against Hamilton Academical this weekend.

Pongolle left Chicago Fire in January, but a cruciate ligament injury has prevented him from playing since - he has played for Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon during a nomadic career.

Manager Mixu Paatelainen said: "Florent Sinama Pongolle has signed with us. We are just waiting for international clearance. If that comes on Friday he will be in the squad.

"He brings experience, he brings tactical awareness, he brings quality in terms of his passing and positioning. He understands football well."

United are six points adrift at the foot of the Premiership after one win in 13 matches.
