Alex Miller has returned to St Mirren as assistant to Ian Murray as the Championship strugglers look to revive their season.

Miller managed the club for three years in the 1980s and led them in a UEFA Cup campaign in 1985.

He has since been involved with Hibernian for 10 years before a short spell with Aberdeen and five years scouting and coaching at Liverpool.

Mark Spalding, who had been Murray's assistant in Paisley, left the club by mutual consent on Monday. The side are currently third bottom of the table, 23 points behind Rangers.

Miller told St Mirren's website: "I agreed to come and help St Mirren as they gave me my first opportunity to manage in the Premier League, also to assist Ian Murray who is a young manager making his way in the game."

Murray said: "I am very happy to have someone of Alex's knowledge and experience beside me and this will give myself and the squad a huge lift."
