Billy Davies has held talks with St Mirren over their vacant manager's job, chairman Gordon Scott has confirmed.

The former Buddies midfielder has been out of work since his second spell at Nottingham Forest ended in March 2014.

Scott says Davies is among the candidates under consideration to replace Alex Rae, who was dismissed at the weekend with St Mirren bottom of the Scottish Championship.

"We've had a conversation with Billy but no more," Scott said. "It's still at an early stage but we have had a lot of good applications in so far.

"I haven't been in the stadium today to check but I reckon there are about 25 to 30 sitting there to be looked at.

"We had hoped to have someone in place by the time of the Falkirk game on October 1 but that is looking unlikely now.

"We will try and get things completed as soon as we can but it's important we get this decision right."
