Veteran defender keen on new St Mirren deal

St Mirren defender Chris Innes is desperate to extend his Buddies stay beyond the end of the season. The 33-year-old stopper, who is out of contract in the summer, has enjoyed a new lease of life at St Mirren Park following a troubled spell with Livingston. Innes insists he is as determined as ever to continue playing, but has confirmed no talks over his future have been held so far. The former Gretna and Dundee United man is putting his future to one side for the moment and is focusing on helping St Mirren stay up.

New lease of life

"I do feel a little bit like I'm having a new lease of life," he told the Daily Record. "Last summer when I was at Livingston I never thought this opportunity to come back into the SPL would have come about. "You should always push yourself and, even at 33 years of age, I feel the fittest, strongest and fastest I have done at any point in my career. "I'm also the hungriest I have ever been and perhaps that's because I saw the other side of things over the past four years.
Hope
"I look at Rangers' Davie Weir at 39 years of age and see the level he is still playing at. That gives hope to us all. "My contract is up in the summer and nothing has been discussed but you have to go out and perform well to ensure you impress people. "I would love to stay here because I have enjoyed it but you need to see where the chips fall in the summer. "Right now it's all about winning as many games as possible in the SPL and making sure we stay in the division."
