Teenage defender shrugs off speculation to sign new contract

Highly-rated defender Raphael Varane has signed a new deal at Lens which will keep him at the club until 2015. The teenager has been a revelation since breaking into the first-team set-up last year, making 13 senior appearances. At just 17 years of age his potential has caught the eye of clubs across Europe, with Manchester United and Chelsea reported to be among those monitoring his progress. Lens were able to rest easy during the January transfer window, safe in the knowledge that Varane had penned a three-year contract last summer. They are, however, aware that they must reward the youngster's ongoing development if he is to stick around for the foreseeable future.

New world

With that in mind, they have moved quickly to tie him down on improved terms. Varane is delighted to have put pen to paper and is confident he can handle the attention which comes with being of Europe's hottest prospects. "Actually I am a very calm person," the France U21 international said in L'Equipe. "I don't know if that is because I am a relaxed person or because I don't really understand what is happening. "This is a whole new world for me and I am discovering new things on a daily basis."
