Paris St Germain responded to Marseille's 6-1 win on Friday with a thumping 4-1 victory of their own against Lens.
Marseille's half-a-dozen against Toulouse had put them on 53 points alongside PSG in second, but the capital club's win means they now top the table by two points and go into their Champions League clash with Chelsea this week in high spirits.
Lyon go to Montpellier on Sunday and can reclaim top spot with a win, but PSG's victory - brought about by goals from David Luiz, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Blaise Matuidi and Javier Pastore - threw down the gauntlet to them. Yoann Touzghar
replied for Lens. Monaco maintained their push for a Champions League spot with a comfortable 3-1 win at Evian.
Leonardo Jardim's men conceded just their second goal in 11 league games but that will not be of too much concern as they moved to within six points of third-placed Marseille with a game in hand.
Anthony Martial, a Kassim Abdallah own-goal and Almamy Toure had Monaco 3-0 up before Modou Sougou grabbed one back for Evian, who are three points above the drop zone.
Bordeaux left it late but Diego Rolan's double was enough to give them a 2-1 win at 10-man Caen.
Lenny Nangis saw red for Caen just after the half-hour mark for a terrible tackle on Wahbi Khazri, but it took Bordeaux until the 69th minute to break them down, with Rolan coolly slotting home after linking up well with Nicolas
Maurice-Belay.
Sloan Privat gave Caen hope with a quick-fire leveller three minutes later, but Rolan made no mistake from the spot in stoppage time after a handball by Dennis Appiah.
Reims moved six points clear of the bottom three thanks to a 3-1 win over 10-man Nantes.
Gregory Bourillon and Aissa Mandi scored in two first-half minutes before visitors Nantes were reduced to 10 men after Chaker Alhadhur was shown a harsh red card just before the break.
Reims extended their lead in the 59th minute thanks to David N'Gog with Ismael Bangoura finding a late consolation for Nantes.
Bastia claimed a 2-1 comeback win over nine-man Nice in an ill-tempered match at Stade Armand-Cesari-Furiani which was briefly halted after fans threw balls onto the pitch.
Carlos Eduardo opened the scoring for Nice in the 18th minute but Bastia levelled less than 10 minutes later through Guillaume Gillet.
Nice were reduced to 10 men just before half-time when Gregoire Puel, son of coach Claude, was sent off for a nasty tackle on Gael Danic, with Giovanni Sio scoring the winning goal for the home side midway through the second half.
Les Aiglons finished the game with nine men after Souleymane Diawara was shown red for an elbow on Bastia striker Mathieu Peybernes.
Paul-Georges Ntep's first-half strike was enough to give Rennes back-to-back wins with a 1-0 triumph over Ligue 1's bottom side Metz.
