Veteran striker Mickael Pagis has called time on a 17-year career after failing to earn a new contract.
The 36-year-old had been hoping to be offered fresh terms by Rennes, but no deal has been forthcoming.
That has convinced Pagis that his career is up and he has decided to slip into retirement.
He is set to remain at Rennes in some capacity, with his new role set to be determined, but he admits his playing days are over.
"Last season, I was out of contract and I did not play much," said Pagis.
"I could have moved elsewhere but I wanted to stay at Rennes, where I feel good. Physically and mentally, it began to be complicated, so I preferred to say 'stop'.
Priority
"The club has proposed a restructuring within the learning centre. This new work interests me. What is certain is that I'll stay on at Rennes because I find it good here.
"I also like beach soccer - it is fun. But my priority is my role at Rennes. This will be a new post specifically for the attackers. We'll know more soon."
Pagis joined Rennes in 2007 and the club's general manager has paid homage to one of their greatest ever signings.
"When I wanted Mickael to join us, there were a lot of doubters," said Pierre Dreossi.
"Today, I regret only one thing - that he did not sign for us sooner.
"He did very well at all levels. He reads the game before everyone else. This type of player is very rare. I do not think there will be many others."
