Defender remains upbeat despite missing out on Spanish switch

Rod Fanni is happy to start the new season at Rennes after seeing a move to Atletico Madrid collapse. The full-back appeared to be on his way to Spain at one stage this summer, with Atletico having made their intentions clear. The 28-year-old openly admitted to being excited at the prospect of playing in Spain and was hopeful a deal could be struck. However, talks soon broke down and Fanni finds himself left in limbo. He admits to being unsure as to where he now stands at Rennes, but insists he will have no qualms about turning out for the Ligue 1 side in 2010/11.

Plans

"Somehow, I fall between two stools," Fanni told L'Equipe. "I have the impression of not being part of the plans and, on the other hand, that I am counted on. "I do not have much choice, so I will wait. "Atletico Madrid are interested and still care. But, as I have always said, I'm at a good club. I'm not frustrated." Fanni is now pushing for a place in Rennes' starting XI for their season opener against Lille on Saturday, while he is also hoping to be included in Laurent Blanc's first France squad for a friendly date with Norway on Wednesday.
