Champions suffer shock home defeat to newcomers

Champions Marseille slumped to a shock home defeat to new-boys Caen, while Lyon were held to a goalless stalemate. The shock of the opening day of the new Ligue 1 season was undoubtedly Marseille's 2-1 loss to Caen. Nicolas Seube put the Ligue 1 newcomers ahead in the 53rd minute before substitute Mamadou Samassa equalised for the champions on 77 minutes. But Youssef El Arabi headed home with four minutes remaining to hand the visitors a famous win. Newly promoted Arles also looked like they could cause an upset at Sochaux when Franck Dja Djedje notched a 10th minute opener. But the home side hit back via Edouard Butin seven minutes later and Jacques Faty then sealed the victory on 54 minutes. Fellow newcomers Brest were also put to the sword at Toulouse, with the home side winning thanks to a 36th minute Daniel Braaten opener and a Machado Paulo penalty four minutes from time. Lyon failed to fully capitalise on Marseille's slip-up after being held to a goalless stalemate by Monaco, while there were also no goals between Nice and Valenciennes.

No problems

But Paris St Germain had no such problems finding the net at Parc des Princes, running out 3-1 winners over St Etienne. Mevlut Erdine gave the home side a fifth minute lead before Dimitri Payet equalised on 38 minutes. But Sessegnon restored PSG's advantage just four minutes later and Nene made sure of the victory with a third goal eight minutes from time. Pascal Berenguer tasted the highs and lows of football when netting the winner in Nancy's 2-1 victory over Lens before being sent-off. Earlier Julien Feret had opened the scoring for the visitors on 26 minutes before Toifilou Maoulida looked like he had earned a point for Lens on 73 minutes. But Berenguer restored Nancy's lead on 83 minutes before being sent off for a second bookable offence with two minutes remaining. Arnold Mvuemba's 69th minute effort rescued a point for Lorient in a 2-2 draw at Auxerre. Sigamary Diarra had earlier put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute before goals from Benoit Pedretti (19) and Anthony Le Tallex (57) for the home side. There was also a stalemate between Rennes and Lille, with Ismael Baugoura putting the hosts ahead in the 25th minute before Moussa Sow equalised for Les Dogues on 62 minutes.
