Lyon out of relegation zone; Arles still without a point

Lyon got back on track with a win at Nancy while newcomers Brest heaped further misery on Monaco in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday. Lyon began the weekend in the relegation zone after picking up just five points from their opening seven games, but a 3-2 win over Nancy saw them leapfrog their opponents. Lisandro Lopez handed visitors a half-time lead and Jimmy Briand added a second shortly after the break but Lyon's weaknesses remain evident as they let their two goal lead slip. Andre Luiz and Julien Feret drew the hosts level but Briand restored Lyon's lead on 75 minutes and Claude Puel's side hung on for a much needed three points. At Stade Louis II, Monaco endured their second defeat of the season as they went down 1-0 to newly promoted Brest, with Bruno Grougi grabbing the only goal. Elsewhere, Auxerre ensured Arles remain pointless as they thrashed the newcomers 4-0 on their own turf with four different goal-scorers in the rout. Alain Traore kicked things off in the 17th minute and Benoit Pedretti made it two before half-time. And it got worse for the hosts after the interval as Roy Contout and Valter Birsa added to the score. Meanwhile, Bordeaux moved into the top half with a 1-0 win over Lorient thanks to Michael Ciani's first half strike at Chaban-Delmas. Sochaux kept up their good form and ensured Lens remain in the relegation zone with a 3-0 home win at Auguste-Bonal. Strike partners Modibo Maiga and Ideye Brown sent the hosts into a two-goal lead by half-time before Damien Perquis added a third midway through the second period. Two goals in five first-half minutes were enough for Valenciennes to take all three points in a 2-1 win over Caen. Gregory Pujol netted on 24 minutes and Mamadou Samassa doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark. Youssef El Arabi's second-half strike brought the visitors back into things but Valenciennes held on for their second win of the campaign.
