PSG and Rennes crash out, but Lille and Lyon march on

Ligue 1 leaders PSG crashed out of the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday after coming unstuck in a five-goal thriller. Rennes were seen off by second tier opposition, but Lyon and Lille are among those safely through to the quarter-finals. Dijon staged a remarkable recovery from two goals down to see off Paris St Germain 3-2. The two teams had met in the league last weekend, with PSG running out 2-0 winners at the Parc des Princes. A similar result looked to be on the cards in midweek when the visitors went ahead through goals from Jean-Christophe Bahebeck (16) and Mevlut Erding (20). But Younousse Sankhare pulled one back from the penalty spot for Dijon on the half-hour mark, with Florin Berenguer hitting an equaliser three minutes later. A 62nd-minute spot-kick from Brice Jovial then gave Dijon the edge, which eventually proved enough to take them through to the next round. Lyon knocked out St Etienne with a 2-1 away win amid scenes of trouble in the stands. Jimmy Briand had given Lyon the lead five minutes before half-time but when the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute, the referee was forced to take the players off the pitch as flares were thrown onto the field of play. When they eventually returned, Michel Bastos made it 2-0 from the spot, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rescuing a late consolation goal for the hosts. Livio Nabab scored in the 116th minute to send Caen through at the expense of 10-man Auxerre with a 2-1 extra-time win. Nabab had got the opener in the 25th minute, but soon saw it cancelled out by Ben Sahar. Auxerre were reduced to ten men with the 51st minute dismissal of Willy Boly, but hung on to send the game to extra-time. With penalties looming, Nabab's second sent Caen through. Penalties were needed to separate Le Mans and Rennes after 120 goalless minutes, with Le Mans triumphing 4-1. Lorient were 2-1 away winners over the 10 men of Montpellier thanks to substitute Joel Campbell. Innocent Emeghara had put Lorient ahead in the 14th minute, and Montpellier's problems grew with a 55th minute dismissal of Garry Bocaly. Olivier Giroud nevertheless equalised in the 65th minute, but there was a further twist as Campbell scored what proved to be the winner four minutes later. A brace from Xavier Pentecote sent Nice through with a 2-1 win over Sochaux, with a late strike from Abdoul Camara not enough to get the visitors back into the game. Lille comfortably saw off Sedan 3-1. Benoit Pedretti's 35th minute strike was soon followed by a Joe Cole goal, and Ireneusz Jelen put them in complete control in the 70th minute. Sedan got the consolation of an 80th minute penalty from Abdoulay Diaby.
