Bruno Soriano's penalty deep into stoppage time secured a 2-1 victory for Villarreal at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday, strengthening their hold on fourth place and the last Champions League berth.

Soriano had earlier put the Yellow Submarine ahead in the 36th minute when he was left unmarked to fire in Mario Gaspar's squared pass, before Deportivo equalized when Lucas Perez assisted Luis Alberto three minutes into the second half.

The match was heading towards a draw when a rash tackle by Fernando Navarro on Matias Nahuel gave Soriano a chance to win it from the spot. He converted, five minutes into injury time, to secure a fifth straight win for Villarreal.

It rounded off a superb week for Soriano after his free-kick earned victory over Valencia on Thursday.

"We were right there at the end, when tension was the highest," Soriano said. "We worked hard to get this win at a very tough place to play."

Deportivo's loss was just their third of the season and ended a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions as they dropped to seventh place.

Athletic Bilbao inched up into sixth after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Las Palmas, despite going ahead twice through goals from Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams.
